[edit] Introduction
Star Trek Online has a pretty robust Global Channel System. Anyone can create a new global channel at any time, and for any purpose. A few of these channels have grown in size and popularity to be the best channels in the game, or at the very least, the most populated. This page will keep a list of public and popular channels, help and advice channels, etc. Please do not add Fleet or Alliance channels.
[edit] Joining a Global Channel
Right click on any Chat Tab in the chat window to bring up the Chat Configuration Window. Click on the Channels Tab and enter the name of the channel you wish to join (or create) in the Join/Create window. Then click Join. The maximum number of channels you may be subscribed to is twenty.

STOWiki has an official Global Chat Channel. You may use it to discuss articles, ask guideline questions or simply hang out with your fellow co-authors while playing the game. Simply follow the instructions above and join STOWiki.

| DOFFtrader | DOFFtrader is your one stop shop to trade DOFFS with other members, or buy and sell your DOFFS using Energy Credits. Easily connect with fellow players to wheel & deal. | 156 |
| Dorado | The purpose of the Dorado channel is to bring all friendly players together to help each other with missions and STFs, to learn from each other about strategies and upcoming events, and to enjoy fellowship and fun while exploring the galaxy together, with free voice server access for players 18 or older. | 326 |
| EliteSTF | If you're looking for experienced STF players this is the place to do it. This channel is dedicated to helping people complete the new Elite (and Normal) STF's. Formerly Fed STF and KDF STF. | 3052 |

| KDFassistance | The KDF Assistance channel helps out Klingon players who may have a more difficult time getting the people needed to run missions like Special Task Forces. | 325 |

| PriorityOne | The PriorityOne channel is the in game communication channel for the Priority One STO Podcast team, listeners and hosts. Meet people, share ideas, discuss the show and have fun! | 233 |
| Radio Mojo | Radio Mojo is the successor to the Risa Radio Channel. Game dev Gozer runs a weekly radio show out of this channel, and in between you can come by for some light chat and DJ requests! | 120 |
| REDALERT | The REDALERT channel is specifically for discussion on all Event content on the Live Server (Holodeck). Players can alert others to event times in this channel, provide and/or receive mission info, find a team or just chat in general about events. | 6231 |

| SSR | The Subspace Radio Channel is the official global channel of Subspace Radio, an internet radio station which caters to Star Trek Online. | 1242 |

| STORP | The Star Trek Online Roleplay Channel is a place where players can get together for out-of-character discussion and roleplay discussion. | 929 |

| TrekRadio | This is the official global channel for Trek Radio.com, another internet radio station which broadcasts to the Star Trek and Star Trek Online communities. | 404 |
| TrekRadio.net | This is the official global channel for Trek Radio.net, another internet radio station which broadcasts to the Star Trek and Star Trek Online communities. | 298 |
| TradeChat | A Global game channel used for trading in the game and general chat. | 50 |
| TTS | The Tribble Test Server Channel. This dev monitored channel is one of the first global channels ever made, it's primary purpose is to discuss the latest Tribble build and bugs. Game developers are frequent visitors and this is a great place to find them and ask them questions directly. If you need advice on how to play the game, you'll find all kinds here. | 2054 |
| UFC | A Global game channel sponsored by the United Fleet Coalition (a coalition of small independent fleets) for use as a chat / socialization channel for players. This channel is aimed at helping those from smaller fleets or who are without a fleet. It gives these players a place to not only socialize, but also ask questions and seek advice from others much like themselves. | 60 |
| UFC-TEAM | Sponsored by the United Fleet Coalition (a coalition of small independent fleets), this channel serves as a place where players from smaller fleets or those without a fleet can come together to create teams for STFs, fleet actions, PvP matches and PvE. It gives them a larger presence and an extended family within the game. | 7 |
[edit] Accessing Global Channels Outside of Game
- Note that there have been publicized reports (i.e. Priority One Podcast) that users who link their Cryptic and Perfect World accounts are no longer able to access XMPP chat from outside the game. This might be a temporary issue, but is worth considering by players who make regular use of this feature.
[edit] Setup
Since May 2010,[2] the use of XMPP chat made it possible to chat to users in global channels (but not local or zone) or to send private messages to users on your friends list. This can be set up on a chat client program, such as Pidgin with the following directions taken:
- Start the Pidgin client
- Click on Accounts > Manage Accounts
- Click the Add... button
- On the Add Account dialog fill out the following:
- Protocol: XMPP
- Username: <Account Name> (the login name used for Holodeck/Live server)
- Domain: CrypticSpace.com
- Resource: <Anything> Name appearing in front of @handle, when chatting from Pidgin
- Password: <Your Account Password>
- Remember Password: <Check mark> (if desired)
- Click Add
[edit] Global Channels
Once the client is set up, a Buddy List can be accessed. To add global channels to it, do the following:
- Click on Buddies, Join a Chat...
- On the Join a Chat dialog add the following:
- Account: <Your XMPP account>
- Room: <Name of room to join/create>
- Server: channels.crypticspace.com
- Handle: <for private rooms>
- Password: <for private rooms>
- Click Join!
[edit] Fleet Chat
Now your in-game fleet channels can be added in the following way:
- Click on Buddies, Join a Chat...
- Server: guilds.crypticspace.com
- Click "Room List" button
- On "Enter a Conference Server" list: guilds.cryptispace.com, then press "Find Rooms"
- In Room List window, click your fleet (format is holodeck!Fleet+Name+Here), and "Add Chat"
- The Alias is how it will appear in your buddy list and Group will be which category its in
